The first match BUCS for the Blues took place on 12th October vs Worcester 1s. Having been promoted to Midlands Division 1 last season, the Blues were excited for the opportunity to play a strong Worcester side. Worcester were holding a BUCS launch night and therefore there was a good atmosphere in the sports centre and a strong Worcester crowd to support their players. The first quarter started slowly, with both teams clearly nervous. Quickly, the Blues came into our own and established some nice play throughout the court. We took an early lead however some strong defence by Worcester meant we were down 9-11 at quarter time. The second quarter was also extremely tight, and by the time the half time buzzer went, the two teams were drawing at 18-18. In the third quarter, Worcester were able to get a few goals ahead, however the Blues were able to hold their nerve and headed into the final quarter down by two. The final quarter saw some great contest between both sides. Some amazing interceptions in the mid court and solid decision making in attack meant the Blues were able to secure the win, with a final score of 43-37. This was a great match to start the season with and we can’t wait to get stuck into training and matches! Special mention to Lucy Walker who was named MVP.
