Playing for the University

Pre-season training

Pre-season training begins on Monday 25th September and ends on Sunday 1st October. In this week there will be three Netball training sessions with coach Helen Stepney, fitness sessions, and other fun group activities. Training sessions will take place at the University Sports Centre, directions to which can be found here: http://www.sport.cam.ac.uk/facilities/university-cambridge-sports-centre

Trials will be held on Friday 6th October 4-6pm, make sure you register by emailing captain@culnc.org with your Name, College, Netball experience and 1st and 2nd choice positions. Those that are successful at trials will be invited back for a second trial Saturday 7th October 9-11pm when we will select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team. All members of Cambridge University are eligible to trial. We have players whose experience range from playing school Netball to playing Superleague, so we encourage players of all standards to come along to pre-season and trials.

Club members are expected to attend all training sessions, and be present for BUCS matches on Wednesday afternoons when selected. We appreciate that timetabling your academic studies around Netball isn't always possible, so please get in touch and with any concerns.

Training and Matches

The Blues (1st) and Jays (2nd) train on Monday and Friday with experienced County Academy coach Helen Stepney. On Sunday the Blues, Jays have strength and conditioning training together, whilst the third team, the Swallows, will train two hours with coach Tam Slater.

The Blues and Jays both play weekly BUCS matches on a Wednesday afternoon alternating home and away matches. The Swallows will play regular matches against local Clubs and school national sides. The Blues, Jays and Swallows will each have a Varsity match against Oxford, this year taking place in Oxford.

Being a member of CULNC is great fun both on and off the court. Our Social Secretary organises regular Wednesday socials with other sports clubs in Cambridge, and CULNC also attends many highlights of the Cambridge sporting calendar including the Hawks & Osprey’s Ball and Varsity Rugby Match at Twickenham. Other events include CULNC Christmas Party and Annual Dinner.

Blues Status

Netball is a Half Blue sport. Half Blues are awarded to all the players of the 1st team who participate in the Varsity match. All 2nd team players are awarded University Colours, both of which entitles Osprey membership. Extraordinary Blues may be awarded on an individual basis via an application to the Blues Committee.
